Rhodes’ painting practice is inextricably linked to drawing, which serve as cartoons for the paintings, but also– as is fitting to her absorption with geography, as maps and guides for her painting. Rhodes first began exhibiting her drawings in 2006 as standalone works. They further evidence her personal aesthetics and her unique investigation into the depiction of physical and psychological space as well as her conflation between the material and emotional landscape.
Rhodes was drawn to views that lend themselves to the nondescript; areas which have been artificially landscaped or in which environmental control breaks down or blends into the natural, or at least the untended. Geothermal Site, 2014-2015, depicts an energy plant, and furthermore an unseen environment which underpins inhabited industrial society.
